Grand Challenge — Holograms, Electronic Skin, and Meta Humans: Blue-Sky Technologies for Social Interaction Research

GMT (UK)

A look at emerging technologies — including a hologram with haptic feedback — that could transform how we present virtual avatars and study social interaction with full control over conversation partners.

Development of new technologies can aid social interaction research in many ways. For instance, developments in robotics and displays that let us present virtual avatars in more interactive ways can give us full control over conversation partners in a realistic setting.

In this session we looked at the initial stages of research that could revolutionise how we do social interaction research. Our guest, Radu Chirila, presented technologies he has been working on, such as a hologram with haptic feedback. The discussion then centred on how we might use new technologies, share resources, and collaborate more closely with the people developing such tools, so that they are best shaped for the kind of research we want to do.
